
Keeping Things Safe When Heat Meets Water: A Guide to Quartz Infrared Lamps
Putting a heater in a shower or a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t using the right gear. You’ve got steam everywhere and water splashing just about everywhere else. Standard infrared lamps just aren’t built for that. To keep things safe, we lean on IP65-rated housings and explosion-proof quartz tubes. It’s the only way to make sure you don’t end up with a short circuit or, worse, shattered glass. The deal with “explosion-proof” quartz Here is the problem: if a tiny drop of cold water hits a red-hot quartz tube, the glass can just snap. It’s called thermal shock. It happens in a heartbeat. To stop that, we use a toughened grade of quartz. It’s built to handle those wild temperature swings without cracking. And if something does go wrong? These tubes are designed to keep the pressure inside, so you don’t have shards of glass flying around while someone is trying to take a shower. Dealing with seals and heat An IP65 rating is basically a fancy way of saying the unit is tight. It keeps dust out and stands up to water jets. We make sure the wiring entries and sockets are sealed tight so moisture never even thinks about touching the live terminals. But there’s a catch. When you seal a box that tight to keep water out, you’re also trapping the heat inside. If you cram a high-wattage lamp into a tiny housing, the internal temperature is going to skyrocket. You’ve got to make sure the housing material can actually breathe out that heat, or just use a timed controller so you don’t fry the circuitry. Setting it up for the long haul The best part about these lamps is the speed. You get that instant, cozy warmth the second you flip the switch. You don’t have to wait for the air in the room to warm up first. When you’re wiring these in, don’t cut corners on the grounding. A “floating ground” in a wet bathroom is a disaster waiting to happen. I always suggest pairing these with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter). Think of it as your backup safety net for those years down the road when the seals might start to wear down.
