
Fixing the Thermal Lag in Your SACMI Rotary Blow Molder
When you’re running SACMI rotary machines at high speeds, you’re fighting a clock. The window to heat those PET preforms is tiny. If your quartz lamps are sluggish or jump around during rapid cycles, you’re going to see it in the final product—wonky wall thickness or that annoying pearlescent haze in the plastic. We built our quartz tubes to stop that from happening. We basically cut out the wait time. Getting up to speed, fast The secret is in the guts of the lamp—specifically the filament mass and the gas fill. We tweaked the tungsten filament diameter and used a high-pressure halogen cycle to kill the thermal inertia. What does that actually mean for you? It means the lamp hits its operating temperature almost instantly. Plus, we’ve toughened them up so they can handle the constant on-off hammering from your PLC without the filaments burning out prematurely. The nitty-gritty on materials We use high-purity fused quartz because it lets the IR transmission through without any interference. For SACMI setups, we often add specific coatings to shift the emission spectrum. This is key because it pushes the heat into the PET preform, rather than just scorching the surface. Then there are the connectors—usually R7s or Sk15. We make sure the fit is tight. A loose connection is a nightmare; it creates resistance, which builds up heat at the socket and eventually melts your wiring. We designed these as drop-in replacements, so you can swap them out and get back to work without a massive headache. The one thing to watch out for Here is the trade-off: high-wattage, short-wave tubes give you the heat density you need for those high-speed lines, but they run hot. Really hot. This puts a lot of pressure on your cooling fans and heat shields. If your ventilation can’t keep up with all that radiant heat, you might actually warp the machine housing. It’s a balancing act. You want the power, but you have to make sure your system can shed the waste heat just as fast as the lamps create it.
