
Let’s Talk About Bathroom Infrared Heaters (And Not Getting Zapped)
Putting an infrared heater in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you don’t do it right. You’ve got steam, splashes, and electricity all in one small room. That’s a recipe for disaster. When moisture gets where it shouldn’t, you get short circuits and electrical tracking. Not great. That’s why we stick to IP44-rated housings. Basically, it means the guts of the heater are shielded from water splashes coming from any direction.
Keeping the Power Where It Belongs
We want zero current leaking out. To make that happen, we use double-insulated wiring and make sure every single termination point is sealed tight. But here’s the thing: heat kills seals. If you use cheap rubber, it’ll crack the moment the heater cycles on and off. We use high-temperature silicone gaskets instead. They can take the heat without splitting. We also make sure the heating element isn’t touching the chassis. By using ceramic insulators at the mounting points, we break the electrical path. It’s a safety net. If a wire frays or a filament snaps, the metal frame won’t suddenly become live.
The Battle Against Steam
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. This creates a weird pressure difference that can actually suck damp air right into the housing. A plastic box isn’t enough to stop that. We use sealed cable glands and IP-rated connectors to lock things down. Plus, the internal wiring has to be rated for the peak temperature of the lamp. If it’s not, the insulation just melts. And nobody wants that.
The Trade-offs
There’s a catch with IP44 designs. Because the unit is so well-sealed, there’s almost no airflow. This means the internal parts—your timers and relays—are sitting in a little oven. They run much hotter than they would in an open box. To stop them from burning out early, we spec out components that can handle that extra heat. And please, don’t skip the grounding. Even with double insulation, you need a dedicated earth bond. If something goes catastrophically wrong, you want that RCD to trip instantly. It’s the difference between a tripped breaker and a very bad day.
