
Why we put our bathroom heaters through “the torture chamber”
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got steam everywhere, random splashes of water, and the temperature jumping from freezing to sauna-hot in about five minutes. If a seal is just a tiny bit off or a coating has a microscopic crack, the whole thing is toast. It’ll short out or start rusting within a few weeks. We’ve seen it happen. That’s why we don’t just “hope” our heaters work—we try our hardest to break them before they ever reach your house.
The reality of that IP65 rating
You’ll see “IP65” on the box, which basically means it keeps out dust and can handle a spray of water. Sounds simple, right? But in the real world, that all comes down to the gaskets and where the cables enter the unit. We shove our heaters into high-heat, high-moisture environments for days. This forces the housing to expand and shrink over and over. If there’s even a pinhole gap, the moisture creeps in. Once that water hits the internal wiring or the lamp terminals, it’s game over. Oxidation sets in, and the heater dies.
Why we “age” the product
Turning a heater on for ten minutes in a clean lab doesn’t tell us anything. It’s too easy. Instead, we use aging chambers to simulate months of actual use in a few days. We’re looking for “creepage”—that slow, annoying way moisture migrates across surfaces that are supposed to be insulated. We also watch the plastics. If the heat and humidity cause the chassis to warp even a fraction of a millimeter, that IP65 seal is gone.
The balancing act: Heat vs. Water
Here’s the tricky part. You can’t just seal a heater in a plastic box and call it a day. If it’s too sealed, the heat gets trapped inside and bakes the components until they fry. It’s a constant tug-of-war. We have to design vents that let the unit breathe but keep the water out. It’s a delicate balance. We verify this during the aging cycle. If we see a lamp flicker or the housing change color even slightly, we scrap the design and go back to the drawing board. It’s a lot of extra work, but it’s the only way to make sure you aren’t staring at a dead heater three months after buying it.
